Orcas Women’s Coalition began in fall 2016 soon after the election of Donald Trump. Caitlin and Marguerite put the word out asking other concerned women to come together and share post-election thoughts and feelings, learn how we can support each other and figure out where to go from here. An email circulated the island and more than 100 women attended the first gathering of what initially began as “Concerned Women of Orcas”. We consoled each other and ourselves, then quickly organized into Action Teams, focusing on pro-active strategies to protect rights and progressive values. After knitting pink hats and marching in the historic Women’s March, we chose a new name, formed a steering committee, created a website, and got to work. OWC now meets quarterly, while most of the important work takes place within Action Teams which set their own priorities and meeting times. Our meetings are open to all women and transgender people – come join us!
